Australian painted snipes have been recorded from Hird Swamp in the IBA.
Painted snipes are short-legged, long-billed birds similar in shape to the true snipes, but much more brightly coloured.
The three species of painted snipe are not closely related to the typical snipes, and are placed in their own family, the Rostratulidae.
It is also the only breeding ground in Hong Kong for the rare painted snipe, a chicken-sized bird with long bill, short legs and colorful facial markings.
Threatened species include the fish Murray cod, trout cod and Murray hardyhead, the birds Australian painted snipe, Australasian bittern and superb parrot, as well as swamp wallaby grass.
